Povidone-Iodine is
an iodophore in which Iodine is bound to the carrier molecule, Povidone. The
complex, Povidone-Iodine, slowly liberates inorganic Iodine when in contact
with the skin and mucous membranes. Only a small amount of Iodine is released
at any one time, giving PovidoneIodine a lower irritant potential, and longer
duration of microbiocidal action than conventional Iodine solutions.
- Povidone-Iodine 10%
(equivalent to 1% available Iodine) in a buffered aqueous solution.
- Povidone-Iodine has
the antimicrobial spectrum of Iodine. It has broad spectrum activity; including
bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa cysts and spores.
- For antisepsis of
minor cuts, wounds and abrasions and treatment of minor skin infections.
- Apply undiluted to
cleaned area with cotton tipped applicators or cotton wool, 3-4 times daily or
as required. Area may be bandaged.
- Known
hypersensitivity to lodine.
- Avoid application
to deep wounds.
- Povidone-lodine may
have a prolonging effect on the wound healing process. Its use therefore should
be restricted to infection control of wounds, rather than general wound
management.
- for external use
only. If skin irritation or rash occurs, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
